If fitness is important to you, you owe it to yourself to make it a priority in your life. We talk each week on the podcast about the benefits of exercise, so you know by now that you are a better parent, partner and employee if you take the time to exercise because it gives you more energy and boosts your brain power, not just clearing away brain fog, but also making it easier to learn new things.
Did you listen last week? Did you do the exercise where I asked you to grab and pen and paper and jot down some of the biggest temptations you face this season? Whether you did, or whether you didn’t, take a minute to think about some of the challenges you face, things that are keeping you from prioritizing your exercise or nutrition habits. Circle or star the biggest challenge—that one thing that gets in your way every day.
Keeping that list in mind, we are going to think of some strategies that you can use so that exercise isn’t always the first thing bumped from your day:
The first is to establish a routine, and I’ll give you an example from my own life. We had what they were calling a blizzard here yesterday, and schools are all closed today. It’s snowy and my kids are home, and all I really want to do is snuggle under the covers and watch Netflix with my dogs. We all have days like that, right?
I also know that I have a Monday routine. Monday is podcast day. So I record the podcast and get it uploaded so that you all can listen on Tuesday mornings. And I also know that my concentration is best first thing in the morning, so I like to try to get the biggest pieces of the podcast done in the morning. After I record the podcast, I will usually get my workout in. (And that’s exactly what I’m going to do once I’m done talking to you here.) After my workout, I edit the podcast until it’s time to get in the car and pick up kids from school. Today, since there’s a storm, I have more interruptions that usual. I’ve been cooking breakfasts and lunches and participating in some Netflix binge watching of The Good Place with the girls. But… I know where my workout fits into the day, and I’m going to make my kids honor that. It also helps that they are no longer toddlers. That would give my day a whole different look – but all of us can benefit from a routine.
